Mechanical engineering internship / co-op, 2026

Third-year mechanical engineering student building things that have to work outside of a report — conveyor-based inspection rigs, rubber-band drivetrains, and product data for over a thousand SKUs.

About

I am in my third year of mechanical engineering at York University, working toward a mechanical engineering internship or co-op placement in 2026. My coursework runs through thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials science, control systems, mechatronics, instrumentation and measurements, and quality control.

Alongside school I have spent several years in technical product operations, maintaining and validating structured product information for more than 1,000 SKUs and tracing discrepancies before they turn into order problems. That work is where I learned to treat specifications as something you verify rather than assume.

In project work I lean toward systems that combine mechanical design with sensing and control — machine vision, load cells, servos, and 3D-printed parts held together by LabVIEW, MATLAB, and Simulink.

Selected work

  1. Automated Part Quality Assurance System

    Engineering project

A functioning conveyor-based automated inspection system that classifies parts by colour and weight, then rejects defects without an operator in the loop.

    • Designed and built the system around LabVIEW, Vision Assistant, MATLAB, Simulink, a webcam, load cell, servo motor, DC motor, LEDs, and 3D-printed components.
    • Applied machine vision to distinguish red from non-red parts.
    • Integrated real-time weight measurement with automated defect rejection.

    • MATLAB
    • Simulink
    • Machine Vision
    • 3D Printing
  2. Rubber-Band Powered Car Prototype

    Engineering project

A rear-wheel-drive vehicle powered entirely by stored elastic energy, designed and iterated until it stopped tipping under acceleration.

    • Contributed to SolidWorks/CAD, gearbox configuration, structural frame, spoiler, wheelie bar, and assembly.
    • Evaluated 3-wheel and 4-wheel configurations, gear ratios, friction, stability, structural balance, and manufacturability through iterative testing.
    • The wheelie bar prevented tipping during acceleration.
    • SolidWorks
    • CAD
    • Gearbox Design
    • Iterative Testing
  3. Conceptual Last-Mile Delivery Go-Kart

    Engineering project

A semi-autonomous last-mile delivery concept developed from stakeholder needs through to quantified design targets.

    • Developed the concept using functional decomposition, stakeholder analysis, market research, and trade-off analysis.
    • Selected differential steering as the steering architecture.
    • Established design targets of at least 15 mph, 10-mile route capability, return-to-origin, safe package handling, and 8-hour battery life.
    • Functional Decomposition
    • Stakeholder Analysis
    • Trade-off Analysis

Experience

  1. Operations & Technical Product Specialist, Scientific Americas Inc.

    January 2020 — Current

    • Maintain, review, and validate structured product information for 1,000+ SKUs, supporting accurate technical specifications and reliable product/order workflows.
    • Investigate and resolve technical, product-data, and operational discrepancies before they develop into larger downstream product or order issues.
    • Process orders, coordinate logistics, and train staff on product specifications, internal workflows, and system usage.
  2. Barista, Starbucks

    December 2021 — August 2025

    • Maintained order accuracy and service quality while multitasking in a high-volume environment and coordinating with team members during peak periods.
    • Earned Partner of the Quarter recognition for outstanding teamwork, reliability, and customer-service performance.
